Dear Parents/Carers of Class 4B
Thank you for embracing me as your child’s class teacher for the second year in a row! It was heart-warming to see the children just as excited as I am to be teaching them again this year. Last Year was fantastic and the children made so much progress. I look forward to sitting down with you on Target Setting Day to discuss how they have further developed since then. In addition to this, we have our Class Sharing Assembly on Thursday 4th October 2018, where you will get to watch a display of the exciting learning that has been taking place thus far. This will be presented in a fantastic, creative show starring your amazing children!
In these first few weeks back in school it has been my goal to established a calm, stimulating and supportive environment where children can explore and develop their knowledge. I am passionate about education and strive to provide the best school year possible for your children.
Each and every one of your children have applied themselves whole heartedly to their learning both in school and at home; I know that your child will continue to make me proud with their progress in LEARNING and BEHAVIOUR every day. Please have a look at the following websites which will further help you in your child’s home learning.
Compare4kids.co.uk is an amazing website for: • Maths (EVERYTHING you’ll need to support your learning in school!): www.compare4kids.co.uk/maths • Mental Maths: www.compare4kids.co.uk/mental-maths • SPAG: www.compare4kids.co.uk/spag
Other useful links: • BBC KS2 English • http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/english/ • http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/maths/ • Improve your typing speed • Keyboarding From the Comfort of Your Couch

- You can also find excellent grammar games on this BBC website: bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/english/spelling_grammar
It is our expectation that children should be reading for pleasure for at least twenty minutes every day.
There are lots of links here to liven up learning! Home learning should be fun! This is the chance for each child to show off and really show everyone what they know. Let your teachers, friends and families see how truly brilliant you are! English: In the Autumn term we will be focusing on the following text types, you can start researching the features of these at home.
- Syllabic poetry (Haikus)
- Newspaper Reports
We will be focusing on Complex sentences, fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases as well as securing our knowledge of other spelling, punctuation and grammar key skills. Our English sessions will be mainly book-based; currently we are delving into the entrancing world of hopes and dreams in ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ Carol Ann Duffy and Jane Ray. Using this as a stimulus, we will create writing opportunities based upon the objectives of Year 4.
In Guided Reading, we will be looking at narrative, and non-fiction texts, with a strong focus on comprehension. To help children to independently develop their comprehension skills, we will provide them with a homework activity (CGP KS2 English comprehension) related to the genre we are focusing on each week.
Mathematics: We are spending the next few weeks securing our knowledge of number (place value, multiplication, division, subtraction and addition) and choosing which strategies to use when faced with two step problems. Here are a few things you should ask us about: • What methods have we been using in class? • When is the right time to use the inverse operation? • Can you explain place value? • Why is ‘subtraction’ and ‘find the difference’ the same thing? Please look out for more information on the website where you can view pictures and videos to show our wonderful learning experience as the school year develops. Let’s start as we mean to go on!
